In chapter 18, several things happen. Renfield meets Mina and acts like a normal human, much to the suprise of Dr. Seward. Van Helsing explains what the tale of nosferatu (Un-dead). The group learns that in order to destroy the evil that has tainted their lives forever, they must destroy the boxes first.

In chapter 19, the men travel to Carfax in search of the boxes. Despite the fact that 21 are missing, Van Helsing is rather excited in a way. The reason being the group chased off Dracula's legions of rats as if they weren't a problem at all. Also, Mina meets Dracula for the first time unknowingly. Dracula uses the mist to seep into the house and make his presence known.

Chapter 19 is where I believe I really start to understand how Renfield operated. For the longest time I thought, hey, this lunatic just likes to eat bugs and kill cats . However, his need for blood from Dr. Seward in a previous chapter, his love for Dracula, and his will to "live" and take lives but not souls like vampires do(which I read later on) has got me thinking. Before I read on, I was baffled. I thought, what if he was Dracula, waiting to get invited into a home to wreck it? Another thought however was, what if he's just an experiment, or an obstacle that the doctor has to overcome before he can get to Dracula. I've thought and thought, and haven't quite finished the book. Maybe the author leaves the reader to guess what he's all about and where he comes from. There are so many possibilities..

I will finish this book too, Mrs. M! I'm so close!
